The Technical Take
The TNT’s are the first Thomas & Thomas rods to be constructed using the highest modulus graphite’s and advanced resin’s available. These materials enabled us to significantly reduce the diameter of the blank while still achieving the stiffness desired of a saltwater rod. This has resulted in the lightest, strongest rods we’ve ever built.

Rod Designer, Tom Dorsey, explains,
"Knowledgeable rod designers understand the significant benefits of a lighter shaft weight and diameter – low inertia, better dampening characteristics for cleaner loops and increased energy transfer to the fly line. The challenge is to achieve this while retaining rod strength. The blend of high modulus graphite’s and state of the art resins has enabled us to achieve this to a degree we previously thought impossible. To the best of my knowledge we have created the lightest, most powerful saltwater rod blanks built anywhere.

It should be noted that we have resisted the temptation to compromise on the density of our cork or ‘skeletize’ our famous saltwater reel seats, in order to claim further weight reductions. We believe that doing so would be counter-productive since these parts of the rod have a miniscule effect on the rod’s casting dynamics and a huge effect on the rods durability and aesthetics. Reducing weight in the rod shaft - in front of the hand - offers the maximum potential for performance improvements and has been our principal focus.”

The Truth

The Thomas & Thomas TNT Series represents the thinnest, lightest, fastest saltwater rods we have ever launched. Anyone with decent timing and a good double haul is going to be throwing the full line and more in the car park. But it’s on the water where these rods really excel. At typical fishing distance of 45’ – 75’ the TNT’s generate maximum line speed with minimal false casts. Thomas & Thomas Under New Ownership

Greenfield, MA - April , 2011. Chief Executive Officer of Thomas & Thomas Rodmakers Inc., Gerry Metcalfe, announced the sale of all company assets.

The Thomas & Thomas brand, machinery, inventory and all other assets were sold to Islamorada, FL based fly fisherman Mark Richens. Concurrent to the asset purchase, Richens also agreed a deal to buy the Thomas & Thomas rod making facility in Greenfield, MA from Lon Deckard of Osprey, FL. The financial details of both transactions were undisclosed.

Metcalfe explained. "The Thomas & Thomas brand is under new ownership. This brings to a conclusion the events of recent years that have troubled Thomas & Thomas Rodmakers. Despite my best efforts, issues arising from the withdrawal of bank funding following the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 have proven insurmountable. The team at T&T produced fly rods of the highest quality throughout difficult circumstances and I wish to take this opportunity to thank them for their hard work and professionalism.

It is my understanding that Mark will continue making bamboo, glass and graphite rods in Massachusetts under the Thomas & Thomas brand and will seek to recruit key personnel locally. Mark also advised me that he intends to honor warranty repairs on existing T&T rods. He will be issuing his own press release to this effect once he has had chance to discuss his plans with the many industry figures that have supported Thomas and Thomas so loyally over the years.

After putting so much into the company I am delighted to see Thomas & Thomas in the hands of someone with a full appreciation for its rich, forty-year heritage. I know Lon Deckard feels the same way.

Mark Richens is a fanatical fly fisherman, a long time user of T&T rods and a regular on the saltwater flats and trout and salmon streams of North America and beyond. At 39, he has the drive and acumen to re-energize this prestigious brand. He is unwavering in his belief that there remains a place for high quality fly rods, built entirely in the USA by craftsmen. I wish him and all involved with his new company well for the future."

Dullstroom Trouting

Hanno , CJ and myself had a awesome morning out trout fishing yesterday in Dullstroom. Even though the wind was pumping we still manage to get some good trout.

We had good success on dragonfly nymphs and the always popular "WHITE" egg. Hanno fished the egg and a # 16 mayfly nymph suspended below a indicator.

On our recent trip to Sterkfontein we found the Yellow's were not really eating the conventional flies we always used. Well we had a surprise up our sleeve's

Notice the nylon loop tied in at the hook bend. Most of you are familiar with static nymphing for trout. One would suspend a team of nymphs ( flies) below a strike indicator or a high floating dry fly.

Well with this loop , one would tie your team and the just loop to loop it to the BIG hopper. Some fish even had a go at the hopper!

The shrimp pattern below is a size 12 Swimming Shrimp , note the neat epoxy work.

This fly , The Extended Graphic Caddis Pupa , is most probably one of the better examples where the use of both Synthetic and Natural materials combine in to really fishable fly. The hook size : # 16

A Shark Tale

All the way from the Pirate invested Seychelles ,

Lu Claven and a very happy client. The thing these days is to fish for Nice Sharks on the Flats. Lu and his team at Desroshes Island seemed to have cracked the code.

As you can see from the photos , the guys are fishing really shallow flats. Normally the fishing will pick up on an outgoing tide. As the water warms up the sharks tend to pull in.

Life after the Challenge ?

Inter Galactic Yellow Fish Challenge 2010

As in the past the 5th Annual Inter Galactic Yellow Fish Challenge did not disappoint in entertainment value and of course the fishing ( this is why we go...)

Spirits were high after the victory of the Bok's over Wales , the true loyal patriotic South African came out in all of us , rather I stop at this point.

A few guest's also made their appearance's , oom Koos Wye Voete , RicieLu and of course the Captain himself with his Red Hart and all.

This year we had 3 teams participating, all the usual suspects and then the new guys from the FAR EAST. Paul Andrews captained the one team , Wayne O the other and Brian Jameson the winning team.

With a very simple scoring system , 1 point to 1 yellow fish Brian's team managed to land 15 yellows , Paul's 14 and Wayne's 13. Jip we were in " LUCKY " team 13 and of course next years challenge is on us.

Thanks to Andre and his team at Wag n Bietjie Eco farm for looking after us , we will recommend you where ever possible.

Golden Masheer from India

All the way from India,

Andi Spielmann just returned from a exploratory trip to India , fishing of course.

He did manage to land several Masheer.

an Adult damsel fly , thanks for the pic. Andi.

All the right gear. Fishing for Masheer you need a 7 wt fly rod and a few Largemouth Yellow fish flies. Andi asked us to build him a 7wt THOMAS & THOMAS Apex , he used a Ross EVO LT 3 reel and one of the new Airflo Clear lines.

Masheer of up to 40lb's have been caught out of this pool. ( no not only in the 1930's )

We are currently working on a trip to float the river . This should happen during October 2011 , we will keep you posted.

The PERFECT Hardy and a MIller

With this collection of Hardy Perfect reels one could most probably pay the entire Pakistani Cricket team to throw all the games against South Africa. Luckily it is the possession of a very proud Australian gentleman.

Well ,well as the heading put it, nearly done. What a year we had ! Some serious fish and some really good friendships.

From the Tarpon and Bone fish caught in Cuba , to the Tigers on the Zambezi at Sekoma , even a few Yellow fish from Israel and a trout or two from Tasmania.

2010 will also be remembered as one of THE Costa Rica Tarpon Experiences , 199 Tarpon Jumped and only 61 boated , the biggest being 168lb , smallest 22lb.

In two weeks time we will have our 6th Inter Galactic Yellow Fish Challenge at Wag n Bietjie. Last years champions will be served by the losing team , cant wait! This event started of in 2004 with 4 guys , now we fish with 28 anglers , who knows maybe next year we will be 50 ( unfortunately this is a " by invitation only " event)

Graham is currently fishing Sterkfontein , well I hope he is...I will give you some feed back upon his return. Also to let you know , if you need any Sterkies or other flies , we run a CUSTOM tying section in store.

I actually do not know how to start this blog post, but like Gary Borger said , a good place to start is at the beginning.

Being in the FlyFishing industry one do get the odd invitation to visit some really excellent waters. The stuff you normally only read about in the magazines or hear about the guy with a mate , whom has a spot on a friends farm , ...

Well , we have one of those .

Also being very blessed with a son who is MAD keen on FlyFishing it is never a problem to get permission from the wife.

A very skinny river

A very good client and friend , Dave, had a awesome trip in Lesotho about a month ago. This is just some photos of him and his fishing buddies Johan , Barend and another Johan

Have a look at the tail on this Brown, a true river fish in every sense off the word.

Transport the Lesotho way , you hike in and the horses carry your gear .

The guys had some really good fishing , even though the river was very low. Dave manage to land a brown of close to 7lb's!

On the way down the mountain, still very dry and dull. This was after a disappointing snowfall during winter 2010

a Day out on the Vaal

A Fine day out

Wednesday , Murray and 3 clients went out to the Vaal ( Ben Jo) . The yellows were spawning very sporadicly , thus they did not fish the shallow gravel beds. All the yellows were caught in waist to knee deep water .

John joined us for the first time on the River , well , it is not the biggest of fish , but, definitely good enough to hook John for life.

Stephan joined us after a very long DRY spell in his FlyFishing career, his best fish for the day was just over 2kg's .

Shane manage to land this beauty, a awesome yellow of close to 4 Kg's. Well done Shane !

This magnificent photo of Peter Whittaker and a 130lb Tarpon was captured on film by his son Kevin. ( Thank you Peter and Kevin ).

Peter and Kevin joined us this past September in Costa Rica , fishing for BIG Tarpon.

Well , both had a trip of note. This is also a first for any of our groups , landing a monster fish like this of the beach!

Kevin also landed some brutes and as in the past, Peck put his boat right on the mark.

We will post some more photo's and a bit of the fishy stories in my next post.

The Blow fly , a very simple , but effective trout fly. If you want the recipe , you have to give us a ring.

One more for the log book.

We found the fish to be very deep. This made us change to sinking and intermediate lines. There was only one problem, we kept hooking up on weed. I then remembered a blob (egg fly) shown to me by one of our younger clients , THE BooBY Blob.

Note the foam , this fly is a winner when you fish weeded still waters.

Yellow fish from Israel !

Yellows in the Jordan River.

We have two types of yellowfish here smallscale (Damascus barbel ) and largescale.

Both living mostly in Jordan river. ( Israel )
Largescales are very common here up to around 2-3kg, caught well on lures (not many flyfisherman here).

Smallscale is not taking lures at all, but taking flies quite well.
I had a luck on a weekend and caught a good size one. Next time I'll try and send you a largescale on a fly (untill my last visit to South Africa I was fishing for them on a lure).

May to June

The first letter in the month's May and June should have been a T. Not a minor or "kleinletter" t like we say it in Afrikaans , but a BIG , Capitol , Mayor "T".

The reason, I ( we ) had some of the best fly fishing for

TARPON , TRAVELLY , TIGER Fish and TROUT

in the last two months.

This is just a short photo essay on the Cuba trip. We were hosted on boa

rd Avalon 1 , a 7 star yacht. The fishing took place in " Jardinas de la Reina " - loosely translated - The Gardens of the Queen.

PATAGONIA - Manuel Greenland

You know how you silently creep up the river bank and seek out a quiet bankside eddy, browns are sipping downed trico spinners from the surface at the tail end of the pool,

their rises rippling the golden surface the river taking its last rays of sun from the setting autumn sun? You cast out a size 18 spinner imitation on a 15 foot leader, allow the fly to drift into the feeding lane and rely on the supple bamboo in your hand to protect the 6x tippet as you raise your rod into the unsuspecting fish.

It was exactly like that.

For about half an hour every three days.

The rest of the time you were chucking massive minnow, leach and matuka patterns on a short 2x leader attached to a fast sinking line – into cover, against the bank, into holes, behind trees etc.And for those of you that like to spit out the word “Mrs. Simpson”, regarding the fly as little more than a stockie bashing invention – think again – one morning it was all that would raise browns on the mighty Chimehuim.The fish were generally larger and harder fighting in the cold water.

Would I recommend it? If big fish are your thing – definitely. We saw a Rainbow that must have been at least 4kg or 5kg, the guy I was fishing with snapped off using a 2x tippet on a huge brown. I broke my personal best for wild trout more than once on the trip. On the flip side it is freezing cold – real feel temperatures usually below 5 and well below zero at night. There were virtually no hatches and infrequent surface activity – so if fishing heavy nymphs and large streamers is not your idea of fun, rather leave it out. Other problem with big streamers is that if cast carelessly they end up stuck in the guide’s face – check the pic. The barb had not been removed so we had to pass it back out of the guy’s face, break the barb and then pull it back out. Our man was not happy – for the record I was not the offending fisherman…

If I were to go back at this time of year I would do a 2 day float on the Chimehuim, a 2 day float on the Collon Cura and stay two days at a lodge on the Collon Cura just above the dam into which it empties to have a go at migratory fish. I would not bother with wading. The Rainbows and Browns were almost invariably in large schools (Rainbows) or hunting packs (Rainbows and Browns). It was interesting to see this hunting business – you’d see three or four large fish swimming in tighter and tighter circles herding minnows into a smaller group and then they’d slash through them. Was awesome to cast a long line straight through the middle of it, start stripping fast and then feel a massive yank on the line and see a fish leap into the air.

The large groups of Rainbows congregated on stony flats – it was almost like flats bone fishing because you’d sight the fish and cast a hopper dropper rig above it, and allow it to drift down. Very exciting fishing, but it did not produce the largest fish.

So the problem with wading was that you may not find the schools or group. A group of four of us fished an entire morning on the Malleo and neither caught nor saw any sign of any fish. People we were travelling with who did not do float trips had very erratic experiences – some days brilliant fishing, some days really poor. With the float trip you keep moving until you find the fish and then either slow down or stop.

I also caught a lot of the native perch (perca – I earned the nickname of “perceiro”). It is ok to catch – fights hard but predictably – stays down a lot. They look a little like smallmouth bass, are pretty and come off the hook easily – so while they are broadly regarded as a nuisance, they are mildly entertaining to catch and nothing like inadvertently getting your last leech pattern stuck in a barbel. They only become a nuisance when they nail your fly while you are targeting a specific trout.

At this time of year gloves, scarf and beanie are essential, as is a quality sleeping bag for camping out. When we camped out I stuck my waders and boots in a carry bag, put it on top of my fishing backpack next to my camp bed in my tent – in the morning the waders and the boots were completely frozen – we’d have to stick them next to the fire to defrost. I fished without gloves the first couple of days and literally got frost bite in my fingers and pains in my hands. Ice would repeatedly form in the rod eyes during the mornings. There were also very strong winds at times – Miles look at the sandstorm pic – that was taken on the Malleo – would you believe?

Another consideration is fishing time. There is no point being on the water much before 9:30 and you want to be out of it by 17:00. This compares very negatively with the mid-summer where you can fish 06:00 until 22:00.

It was awesome as expected, and I tried to make the best of it. I got 3 fish at the boca of the Chimehuim (so I never have to go there again), and I got some very large fish – but really honestly I don’t think it is for me. After this experience I seriously doubt that I will make trips far to the South to catch huge trout. The kind of fishing and the cold and wind are just not my thang…

It was during my second visit but first with rod in hand to the splendid sporting retreat of Twin Lakes just out of Hobart.

The first afternoon was spent casting to the murky depths of Niffty,s lake for a shot at one of the huge browns that live there. As the afternoon turned to the evening shades that only Tasmania can offer the fishing just got better and better until I could double haul no longer and besides I found that the pungent odor that punched me in the nose every few minutes was in fact Me!

So after a long shower that found me staring at the wall for long periods thinking of the great weights of fish that I had tempted with my amateurish attempt at fly tying, and of getting some great shots of fine, superb conditioned fish, it was off down the track for dinner with our fine hosts the Cooks, Rosie and Ian.

After more than one or two reds Ian told of great trout that were so big they ate ducklings, yes ducklings. It was about this time I felt that someone had pinned a note to my shirt with the word “sucker” written in bold red letters. I am not sure of the quantity of alcohol consumed but then it was the next day…..

We decided to rest the water of the top lake and headed off at first light to the bottom and larger lake. As we sneaked past the Cook,s home I am sure I could still hear them laughing about the gullible Welshman and the duck story.

Then it happened.

As we neared the shoreline we startled up a mother duck and her five ducklings no more that a few days old. As we watched them paddle away looking a little like the wall hangings at my mother house when I was a child a sixth duckling started out after the now perfectly formed front group. The comment was made, how he or she had better be careful that the “giant trout “did not pick him or her out for breakfast. Then with hardly a swirl the hapless duckling was no more, not a splash, no feathers, in fact nothing like we saw in Jaws at all, just no duckling.

This is not a Loch Ness story but would not have believed it if in deed I had not seen it with my own two eyes and with another witness to verify my story as fact.

After countless hours at the vice , this is what Murray made happen. For those of you who did not notice the hook , have a real close look. The detail is unbelievable, it might even look as if the real thing was skewered to be fish food.

Take note of the vanes on the the wings, all done by hand and a lot of patience. You will also notice the segmentation on the body... and the claw tips at the end of the feet.

A true master piece demonstrating technique , material manipulation and craftsmanship. This truly reflects the passion Murray has for the art of Fly Tying.

Of Dragons & Damsels

Last Tuesday Murray tied 2 flies , the Razor Foam Damsel and a awesome Dragon fly pattern , the Pappa Roach. If you would like some more info on these 2 beauties give us a ring in the shop or send us a mail.

Hi, we will have our usual tying demo at the shop 2night , all about DRAGONS & Damsels.

We did "visit" the Vaal river past Saturday & Sunday. The river is running very high still, +/- 300cms. Hope fully the water will start to subside during March. The visibility was also very bad , maybe 8cm.

One more thing, we will have the FlyFishers Unlimited / Stealth open day at the shop on Saturday. We will also have the Super 14 Rugby live on the tele. Come past for a chat or a cold one.

Well , it is going on two months solid now. NO fishing in the Vaal. We will be down on the river Saturday and Sunday , will let you know what happened.

We had our first Fly Tying Demo ,Tuesday evening past. Murray tied a new TADPOLE pattern for big hungry trout in THRIFT . The second fly was a Foam Caddis ( Sterkies fly ) and then he also demonstrated how to tie in a NYLON loop on those BIG foam hoppers if you wish to fish a small dropper of the dry.

This will take place every Tuesday up to the end of March. Drop us a mail or give us a ring if you want to find out a bit more.

The status on the Vaal river:

If the river keep on dropping like this we will be able to fish mid FEB. again . Unfortunately we had reports of HUGE fish kills on the river , the "GUYS" are still looking into why?

Sterkofontein fishing was tough this last weekend , this magnificent piece of water also experienced the effect of all the rain we had lately . The experts reckon the water level is up by nearly a meter.

Untamed Angling will officially open their operation on Desroches Island , Seychelles this coming February. We have direct contact with some of the guides exploring the fishing options for the past 3 months. Between the guys and a girl they have landed over 15 PERMIT , plenty GT's and a huge amount of Bone fish.

Lu , Tyrone and Remerio are currently scouting some new water around Seychelles. These two permit were caught and landed with in 45 min off each other , this definitely hold some promise. We will keep you updated on any future happenings.

One more thing , both these fish chowed the new " permit pleaser" give the shop a ring or send us a mail if you would like the dressing, or want to order a few custom flies.

We were saddened to learn that after a long tough fight, Jack Gartside lost his battle with lung cancer.

Jack Gartside was counted one the most innovative and prolifically inventive fly tyers of the modern era. He got his first fly tying lesson in 1956 . Ever since he's been tying and fishing, accumulating an extraordinary range of fishing experience in fresh and salt water. He was one of the first fly tyers profiled in Sports Illustrated magazine (Oct. 12, 1982). Jack's best-known original patterns include the Gurgler, Sparrow, Soft Hackle Streamer, and the Gartside Pheasant Hopper. His designs have been featured in Eric Leiser's Book of Fly Patterns, Judith Dunham's The Art of the Trout Fly, Lefty Kreh's Salt Water Fly Patterns, Dick Stewart's Salt Water Flies, and Dick Brown's Flyfishing for Bonefish.

This fly resemble the " common Ghielliemientjie " a small indigenous fish which occur in the Vaal & Orange river system. This is one of the Large mouth yellow fish's main food sources.

This version of the " Dikkop Ghielliemientjie" is enhanced further with the use op a petijean magic head. The fly will have a natural fish like movement when retrieved.

These flies were tied with SF Blend and Mirror image.

SILVER

Two weeks , this is the time spend back in our lovely country SA. The big question now , what's NEXT ?

It is not uncommon for Tarpon aficionados to ask this question over and over, once you have been gazed upon by the SILVER KING life will never be the same.

It is also not uncommon to wake during the wee hours , screaming , kicking and soaking wet ... half way into the fight. Your arms ,legs and fingers weak , shaking and cramping , .. for f... sakes you have been pulling on a fly rod connected to a SILVER train...........

I can see the look in Murray's eyes , there definitely is a glint of SILVER present.... and he is not the only one.

Well , dit is nou genoeg , just had to put something down on "paper" , will be honest , dink nie dit het regtig gewerk nie ....

Sterkfontein Update

Golden Sterkies Yellow,

I have just returned from a weekend at Sterkfontein dam. I can honestly say it was the finest weather i have ever experienced at this awesome piece of still water. The fishing on the other hand (Darren) was a bit more challenging . Members in our group did land several fish with the high light being Hilton's 3.6kg Large Mouth Yellow.

This is the view from our unit at Qwantani. If you ever want to know what is happening with the weather at Sterkies , just visit www.windguru.com. The forecast was 100% spot on.

Jaco fishing for some cruising yellows in Bosckloof. Jaco and Hilton cuaght some nice fish off the banks , while Shane , Tibby and Malcolm were drifting in the bay.
The fish locked on to some # 16 and # 18 black flying ants , later a hatch of redish flying ants also apeared. ( not our rysmiere)
This yellow I hooked on a # 14 PTN - Flash Back nymph. I had a lot of refusals on dries and changed to nymph's , eventualy, tight lines.

We are planing a trip or two , will keep you updated.

The Cottage at Loch Ranoch

Ready for action , this trip we made use off the Arrow backpacker boats, awesome kick boat to fish from. The nicest thing , u can handle the boat by yourself.

It does look as if Gerhard was the only guy catching fish , this is a nice cock from the POTTS . This fish nailed a Moo Moo.

Then the snow came, this was round about 6 o'clock in the morning. A Proper surprise

The new Look FlyFishers Unlimited.

This is a view of the PIRANNA deck , long and very "serious" conversations on FlyFishing and things will take place here. We will also have live Rugby , off course only when the Boks or the Bulls play well.

Yes , it does look like a one way mirror, but this is the most technologically advanced rod building workshop in SA. Elphus and i will spend a lot off our time here. Also keep in mind we do give rod building
lessons , should you want to build your own stick.

The following shot is part off our extensive range of fly tying material and Murray's pride and joy - THE TYING BENCH -. The bench can seat 4 tiers easy , and with Murray close by you will have a tying experience of note.

Hi,

I just want to apologise for the absence of any new postings for the last month and a bit, we are busy building the shop of shop's , the honey hole of honey hole's , the perfect lay if you were a 8pound rainbow and so on and so forth.

We will be relocating our Fourways shop to Cedar square shopping centre , coner off Cedar Road and Willow avenue. ( hopefully by the end of July) , in next week i will start to post some pic's off progress.

" If you wouldlike to come past the new possie , you are more than welcome. Entrance will be a beer or two"

Keith Matthews was fishing on the Zambezi, after donating his Polaroid's to the river god his strip was abruptly interrupted by a solid take.This is the reason why. This tiger weighed in at 17lb's , awesome fish

Large Mouth Yellow Festival

Last weekend the annual Largie festival took place at Elgro Lodge. With the weather being up and down all the time the fishing was very challenging. Among other Horst Filter did get a few fish , mixed bag , largies and small mouth. Interesting note, the small mouth are still eating off the surface at the tail ends.

Fly Tying Instruction @ Oxbow

Murray was invited to do a fly tying demonstration / talk at Oxbow the past Saturday. He and Alison even had a chance to cast a line.

Alison ( Murray's better half) casting a line at Oxbow. In the recent past quite a few lady fly fishers took the rod up again.

This was during the tying demo. Look at the expression, maybe the forceps got a bit HOT !!. Murray had about a dozen guys taking part in the demo, they tied the Pappa Roach.( check the tying instructions earlier in the blog)

Shane fished in Clarens 3 weeks ago and this is what the Fishing Gods blessed him with.He hooked this brown on a # 14 Beige May fly nymph, right in the middle of the day!

Lu's Hot Spot Nymph

Recipe:

Hook : Siman Weighted Nymph Hooks size 10 - 16
Thread : 6/0 ( to match colour of material)
Body : Pheasant centre tail +/- 5 fibres.
Tail : Pheasant centre tail
Wing case : Pheasant centre tail
Ribbing : Fine copper wire

Note: The lead body can be painted black, red , chartreuse .......

Siman pre weighted hooks , off course we sell them in the shop !!

1. The hook, not painted yet.

2. The same hook, painted .The paint has also been coated with Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails ( Murray and Lu use this on their nails ......)

3. The centre tail fibers being tied in, also note the copper rib , this will make the fly a bit more durable. The length of the tail is normally equal to the length of the hook shank.

4.After the centre tail was palmer'd forward , the copper ribbing was also wound forward and tied off.

5. Note, the centre trail is tied of on top of the hook shank . This will form the wing case .

6. The thread is started again, ahead of the painted lead body.

7. The centre tail is pulled over the lead body to form the wing case. You can wind it around in front of the lead body to fill the gap and create a bit of a collar.

After all of this , tie off the thread , string your rod and go and fish!!

( you can also come past the shop and buy a few rods and reels ?)

Morris and a Nice 5KG Largie

The fish nailed the black and olive variegated Woolly Bugger. Fishing structure in not to deep water turned out to be the thing.

They did see a few fish move , but according to the expert it is still a little bit early. The water need to drop to 14deg C

The One and Only - Pappa Roach

Recipe:

Hook : Grip 13812 ( Streamer / Leeches ) size 4 - 12
Thread : 6/0 Olive
Body : Siman Sparkle Squirrel dubbing Brush ( Olive ) & Olive Zonker strip
Tail : Olive Zonker Strip
Wing case : Olive Mallard
Legs : Silly Legs
Eyes : 40lb Nylon ( melted )

1. Secure the nylon eyes on the hook shank,figure of eight.

2. Tie in the Siman Dubbing Brush and the Zonker strip on top of the hook shank. Make sure to tie the brush in first.
3. After being tied down , measure the lenght off the zonker strip ( do not use cross cut zonker ). Move the thread plus minus 3/4 towards the hook eye. This is where the dubbing brush will be tied off.

4.Note the zonker being pulled over the body of the dragon. Make sure this is secure, you do not want the zonker to slide to one side.

5.Tie in the wing case of Olive Mallard flank. This should be tied on top of the Zonker. Leave enough space to tie in the silly legs!

6. Tie the back two legs in by folding the rubber around the thread ( come to the shop ,we will show you) . The front legs is tied down the same way as the eyes ( figure of eight )

7. Cover the silly legs and eyes with dubbing to finish the fly.

" I have landed my biggest trout ever on this bugger , a monster of 5.3kg at Highland Lodge"

The Marobou Dragon

Recipe:

Hook : Grip 12804 ( Wet fly / Nymph ) size 6 - 12
Thread : 6/0 Olive
Body : Siman JS Soft Dub - Olive
Tail : Olive Marabo
Wing case : Olive Phesant tail
Legs : Wing case extended
Eyes : 40lb Nylon ( melted )

1. Melt the nylon to form the dumbbell shape eyes. Secure the eyes with the figure of eight method . Wind the thread towards the bend , stop between the hook point and barb.

2.Tie in a small bunch of buck tail ( this keep the Marabou from wrapping around the hook).

3.Directly on top of the buck tail , tie in the marabou . This should be roughly one and a halftime the length of the hook shank.

4.Tie the pheasant center tail but end first , flush against the marabou. (butt end - bottom , tip end top) , also on top of the hook shank. Note the position of the dubbing, start flush with the marabou.

5.Dub the body ( rugby ball shape ) right up to the eyes. Pull the win case over . tie down , now split the feather to form the legs either side the dragon.

6. Finish the head with dubbing ( figure of eight method again) , tie off and put some head cement.

This fly can be fished alongside weed beds , on its own or in tandem with the beady blood worm. One thing about the retrieve on this guy, the slower you go the better it gets!

Fishing the Karingmelk

A good trout landed on the 8' # 3 , yes off course the action is different , the rod heavier , but the cast is so sweet.

The proof of the pudding is definitely in the eating. This trend to fish bamboo seem to be a world wide movement. Give me a ring in the shop if you are interested in some bamboo talk.

Recipe:

Hook : Grip 14723BL size 10 - 16
Thread : Red 6/0
Body : Red Beads
Tail : Red Marabou

Tying Instructions

1.Place the beads onto the hook , note , no thread work at present. The hook size will determine the number of beads to be used.

2.Secure the beads with the thread ( +/- 6 wraps ).

3.Tie in the red marabou tail on top of the hook shank. Coat with head cement ( thread ) , Go and Fish.
